Dorothy C. Simmons Obituary

On December 29, 2020 Dorothy C. Simmons finally broke free from her long battle with Alzheimer’s.  Her beautiful spirit has joined her husband Jack Simmons and they are singing and dancing together.  Mom (Dot) was born in 1929 in Colquitt, Georgia.  She graduated from Miller County High, and Piedmont School of Nursing in Atlanta.  She married John W. Simmons in 1952, and went on to raise 5 children.  Dorothy was predeceased by her husband John W Simmons III, parents Juanita and Johnny Farr Calhoun, in-laws Jewel and John W Simmons II, brothers JE Calhoun, CF Calhoun, sister Merline Calhoun Lane.  She is survived by her children Karen Harriell, Jack (Juli) Simmons, Steve (Debi) Simmons, Valerie (Frank) Reynolds, Rich (Deb Seavey-Simmons) Simmons.  She was Grammie to Angie, Aaron, Alexis, Zachary, Shea, Courtney, Nathan, Graham, Matthew, Karen Denise, Rose, Franki, Hannah, Shannon, Anna, John and 19 great grandchildren.  She is also survived by brothers Don (Debra) Calhoun, Mike (Jan) Calhoun, and sister Betty Calhoun Sheffield.  She was a compassionate caregiver as a nurse, mother, and grandmother who lived up to the highest ideals of each calling.  She enjoyed square dancing, singing in church, an active social life and was always helping out and making friends.  While the last years were difficult, mom always had a smile that could light up the room, was quick with her infectious laugh, and did not mind a good busting as she could return in kind. Godspeed mom, we love you.

At this time there is no memorial service planned, and in lieu of flowers a donation to Alzheimer’s Association (act.alz.org) is preferred. Condolences may be expressed online at www.SavageFS.com. Arrangements were entrusted to SAVAGE-DeMarco Funeral Service.
