George L. Bates

January 1, 1946 – March 26, 2025 

It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of George L. Bates, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, who peacefully passed away on March 26, 2025, at the age of 79. Born on January 1, 1946, George leaves a legacy of laughter and devotion to his family. He is survived by his best friend and cherished wife of many years, Linda J. Bates, and his children Michele Bates, Nicole Bates, and Jason Bates (Cari Watkins-Bates).  George was a proud grandfather and great-grandfather to Latoya Barnett, Alissa Scofield, Sage Tifft, Ethan Bates, Jacob Bates, Jayden Ball, and Logan Spring. 

 A veteran of the United States Navy, George was always proud of his time in service. After his military career, George enjoyed a career at ServeRite, from which he retired. More than anything, George was an avid Buffalo Bills fan, cheering on his team through thick and thin. His passion for the Bills was rivaled only by his love for his loyal companion, a dog named Riley, who brought him endless joy and companionship. George was a kind soul, always ready with a smile, a helping hand, and a kind word. He was loved by all who knew him and will be greatly missed. 

A private celebration of life will be held at a later date. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made in George's name to Broome County Dog Shelter (https://broomecountyny.gov/shelter/donate).
