Geraldine Shumadine Obituary

Geraldine D. Shumadine, 87, of Binghamton went to the Lord on Monday, November 8. She is predeceased by her; parents, Alfred W. and Rose Muss; her husband, Albert Shumadine and her daughter Patricia.  She is survived by; two sons, Albert (Lucy) and James (Nga), her step-grandchildren Ran, Kelly (Vinny), Tai (Lyna) and Anh (Vi);  her brothers, Alfred (Joan) and Robert (Faye); her cousin Barbara Wilson; her close friend Dorie Perry; as well as several nephews, nieces and step-great-grandchildren.

Geraldine was born August 1, 1934 and was a lifelong resident of Binghamton, NY.  Gerry, as she was often called, was a loving mother who worked hard to provide for her children. She worked at the former Fowler’s Department Store, starting as an elevator operator and working her way up to a bookkeeper in the store’s credit department. Later when the store was sold to the Bon Ton retail chain, she worked as a sales clerk until her retirement. She had a deep love for her family and friends. Her generous, good natured and caring personality was reflected in her warm smile and cheerful laughter.

Geraldine was a long time member of St. Cyril and Methodius church on Clinton Street in Binghamton. She was a member of the Altar Rosary Society and often times would do volunteer work for the church. She loved going to church festivals where she would dance to Polka music and enjoy kielbasa and pierogies.  She was a former piano teacher and loved all types of music ranging from country music to rock and roll. She was fond of Patsy Kline but her absolute favorite was Elvis Presley. She was frequently caught dancing in her seat whenever one of his songs was playing. Geraldine loved children and was part of the Foster Grandparent Program at Woodrow Wilson Elementary School. She really enjoyed working with the children and always had an amusing story or two about their antics.

Funeral services will held at Noon Monday, November 15, at St. Cyril’s church on Clinton St. in Binghamton.  The family will receive friends at the church from 11 am until the time of service. Condolences may be expressed online at www.SavageFS.com.  In lieu of flowers, please make donations in her honor to the women’s ministry at Saint Paul’s church in Binghamton or to the B.C. Humane Society on Conklin Ave.  The family would like to thank the staff of Lourdes Hospice for their support and care during a most difficult time. A special debt of gratitude is owed to Sister Lucia Mugambi for the help and comfort she provided to the family.  Arrangements were entrusted to SAVAGE-Demarco Funeral Service in Binghamton.
