Kenneth Hawken Jr. Obituary

Kenneth John Hawken, Jr, 94, of Binghamton, NY, passed away peacefully at Elizabeth Church Manor on October 19, 2024. Kenneth was predeceased by his loving wife of 61 years, Elva, His parents Kenneth and Aune, and his sister, Esca. He is survived by many loving children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
After graduating high school, Ken worked at many jobs including; construction, trucking, retail sales, and logging. Never one to avoid furthering his education through hard work, Ken learned to run many types of heavy equipment where he worked on highway construction projects during the summer. He was proud to say he had a hand in building many of the roads and highways in the Binghamton area. During the winter months, he drove tractor-trailers for the Agway Petroleum Company. As construction projects became scarce after the 1960’s and 1970’s, he went to work year round at Agway and worked his way up in the company by taking management training classes, and retired as a district manager.
Ken grew up on Long Island where he loved to fish and swim in the ocean. He loved to tell stories of the many good times he had during his long and interesting life. He was ever an optimist and had a good word for everyone. He was always building or fixing things and became very proficient at do-it-yourself projects. He put those skills to use later in life by volunteering to build homes with Habitat for Humanity. He also volunteered with and was a member of the Masons.
Ken and Elva loved to travel with their camper, and visited many national and state parks where they met fellow travelers, some of whom became lifelong friends.
Ken will be missed by his family, friends, and people he lived with at Saint Louise Manor and Elizabeth Church Manor, where he spent his final days in their kind care. As Ken liked to say at family gatherings when we sat down to dinner, “A hush fell over the crowd”.
At Ken’s request, no funeral or memorial services will be held. His family will hold a private memorial for him at a future date.  Please express condolences at www.SavageFS.com.  Full obituary at www.TiersNews.com.  Arrangements entrusted to SAVAGE-DeMarco Funeral Service.
