Mary Grace Griffith (“Marigrace”), 85, of Endwell, New York, passed away Monday morning, January 13, 2025, at Binghamton General Hospital.
She was born July 31, 1939 in Scranton, PA to William (Bill) Johnston (called Bop) and Mary Josephine Bossert Johnston (Nana). Mary Grace attended St John the Evangelist grade school and South Catholic High School in Scranton.
She married George Michael Griffith Sr on August 22, 1959 in Lackawanna County.
She is survived by her five sons and their families: George Michael Griffith, Elgin, TX, Christopher Griffith and wife Dina, Apex, NC, Gregory Griffith, Endwell, NY, John Griffith and his wife, Tammy, Youngsville, NC, David Griffith, Endwell, NY; her grandson, Kevin Griffith, Ballston Lake, NY, and by her niece, Janice Gavern and great niece, Lisa Goodman, Montrose, PA, her nephew, Thomas Gavern and his wife Simona, Scranton, PA, and nephew, Timothy Gavern and Marissa Quiroz, Irwindale, CA.
Music was always a common thread in her life. Her family remembers her playing the pipe organ for Mass and other services at St John the Evangelist Catholic Church in Scranton, PA back in the 1960s.
Most family gatherings had a music component, from Christmas caroling, to sing-alongs at parties, to jam sessions with piano and guitar.
Many people remember her for the 25 years she spent playing piano in the Binghamton Regency Hotel and its Mario’s Lounge. She provided what she called “unobtrusive background music” for traveling businessmen and hotel visitors.
In her living room, one of her favorite possessions was the actual piano she played at the Regency. They gave it to her as a retirement gift after the hotel lounge closed.
Her music always put a song in our hearts.
Now, she’s playing with the angels.
A graveside service will be conducted on June 18, 2025, at 1:00 P.M. in Cathedral Cemetery, Scranton, PA. She will be buried with her parents. Condolences may be expressed online at www.SavageFS.com.
