Marion (Bachovchin) Haflin
of Apalachin
Marion Haflin, 93, passed away Monday, August 4, 2025, after a recent illness. She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law Bill and Ramona Haflin, her grandsons Sam and Gus (Delaney Reardon) Haflin; her nieces and nephews Paula (Ron) Lesko, Barbara Classen, Mary Ellen (Bart) Mitchell, John (Judy) Bachovchin, Becky (Dick) Stillwell, Brenda LaDue, Daniel (Mary Ellen) Northrup, Geary (Samantha) Schwartz, Kevin (Linda) Schwartz, Darryl (Lisa) Schwartz, and Lori Schwartz.
Marion was predeceased by her husband of 54 years Ralph “Hawk” Haflin, her companion late in life Walt Rekort, her mother Anna Bachovchin, brother John Bachovchin, sisters Anne Gaidusek and Helen Britton, sisters-in-law Marie Schwartz and Carol (Keith) Northrup, nephew-in-law Rich La Due, and niece Marci Schwartz.
Special recognition goes to Marion’s neighbors, Ann Wilcox and Ed Conoran, for their many years of helping Marion stay healthy, safe, and loved. Their kindness and generosity were, and continue to be, enormous.
Marion was born in Binghamton, New York and graduated from Binghamton Central High School. Through the years, Marion enjoyed collecting medieval art to decorate her basement rec room and designing (and adding to) her home in Apalachin. She particularly enjoyed reading the newspaper’s daily comics and amassed a very organized collection of them. She met Ralph at a dance, and they enjoyed square dancing (and the costumes!) for many years. Marion and Ralph also had a special love for their labradors (Jet, Goldie, and Thumper). Marion was a long-time executive secretary at GE, retiring when she became a grandmother. Marion was devoted to her son and grandsons and brought joy to her many nieces and nephews.
As an homage to Marion, please consider wearing turquoise/teal at her celebration of life. A funeral Mass will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, August 20, at Saint Margaret Mary Church at 1110 Pennsylvania Avenue in Apalachin followed by a reception at the church hall. Burial will be at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation in Marion’s memory to Mercy House of the Southern Tier, 212 N.
