Mary Williams

Mary Williams August 31, 1927 – June 27, 2026

Mary Williams, age 98, of Chenango Bridge, NY, passed away and was welcomed into Heaven and into the loving arms of Jesus in the late afternoon on June 27, 2026.  Mary was born on August 31,1927 in Johnson City, NY. 

Mary is preceded in death by her parents Edgar Dever Webb, Ethel Melissa Palmer Webb and her infant brothers Gerald and Douglas.  She is also preceded in death by her husband Harold.  She is survived by her son Gary (Lugene Whitmore), daughter Debbie (Dave Houghtalen) and her grandson Christopher (Rebecca) Neville.  She is also survived by three great grandchildren Summer, Carter and Evangeline.

Mary attended Sunday school and church at Boulevard Methodist Church until the age of 5 when the family moved to Chenango Bridge where her mother took her to C.B. Methodist Church.  She remembers her mother always singing Blessed Assurance and What A Friend We Have in Jesus.  At the age of 12 when her mother was hospitalized with terminal cancer she went to live with her aunt and uncle in Johnson City.  She attended Boulevard Methodist Church with them and became active in UMYF.  At the age of 16 mom attended a Youth for Christ meeting at the Masonic Temple where she gave her life to Christ.  After she married she joined the sewing club and  made many life long friends, which included the Schick family.  In 1955 mom & dad moved into her family home in C.B.  Mom worked at Ansco for 4 years, she left to raise her son. They adopted Gary in 1955 when he was 6 months old and Debbie in 1957 when she was 6 weeks old.  Mom was active in many different organizations.  When we were in elementary school she taught arts & crafts at summer fun.  She also was involved in scouting, maybe you had her for a scout leader.  She put together parades in C.B. as well as the field days at the civic field.  When we were teens she put on dances at the elementary school with live bands, one of them was Brotherhood.  We were so blessed to have mom when we got home from school every day.  We can still smell the homemade spaghetti sauce cooking with tomatoes that she canned when we walked in the door. During the summer she would find out which of the neighbor kids could go to the park and we would load up the station wagon and head to C.V. State Park or Greene pool to cool off.  Her friend Dot Turner had boys and we would pick them up to go with us.  Dad was a volunteer firefighter in Chenango Bridge, so of course mom joined the auxiliary.  She helped with many fundraisers to purchase equipment for the firefighters.  We also did a lot of camping growing up, sometimes with Shirley Prentice and also the Glover family.  We camped at C.V. State Park, Kring Point on the St. Lawrence River and in Cape May NJ.  We grew up in the best time and on the best street.  Mom took care and helped raise her grandson Chris and also Joseph Hektor, Dan Sabato and Scott Russell.  She was involved with the Arthritis Foundation for many years where she made many wonderful friends.  Mom was active at C.B. Methodist Church in Rachel Circle and the Hospitality Team. Maybe you enjoyed one of the delicious meals that the church ladies put on.  The church family has some of the best cooks. As you can see our mom wasn't one to sit still.  When we took her to Florida to visit family and friends she was constantly saying “I didn't come all this way to sit around, what are we going to do?” 

We want to acknowledge her long time friends Rosie (Daryl) Hansen, Carol Gates and Sandy (Lynne) Simmons, Shirley (Don) Prentice and Patty (Wayne) Sherwood your friendships were so very special to mom.  

The family would like to thank all the employees at Elizabeth Church Manor for their thoughtfulness and care they gave our mom over the last three years.  We can not say thank you enough for your kindness.  She loved all of you and appreciated all you did for her.  We know she was a handful at times.  She was called sassy, spunky and gg.  One thing about our mom, she spoke her mind and you knew where you stood, she never said anything behind your back. We always looked forward to celebrating birthdays and holidays at her house because she made them very special.  She was a fantastic cook and she gave very unique presents. She knew what is was like to go without growing up in the depression. She always thought of others and their needs. She gave everything she had to everyone, she would give you the shirt off her back. “Well done, good and faithful servant” We love you and we will see you in Heaven. 

Funeral services will be held at 7:30 p.m. Monday July 20, 2026, at Savage-DeMarco Funeral Service, 338 Conklin Ave., Binghamton, with visitation from 5 p.m. until the time of service. Burial will be held at Chenango Valley Cemetery. Arrangements entrusted to Savage-DeMarco Funeral Service.
