Norm Bowell, 85, of Endicott NY, passed peacefully surrounded by family on Monday, February 7, 2022.
Born in Thompson PA, and raised in Binghamton, Norm was a lifelong resident of Broome County, living in Endicott for all of his adult years with his loving wife of 61 years, Beatrice (Zampi) Bowell. Voted High School Heart-throb at Binghamton North H.S., his charm only blossomed with his intellect and fun-loving personality through-out his life. He spent his 35 year career at IBM, working his way from tool-maker apprentice to New Products Administrator, and his time spent living in England on assignment was a highlight in his career and life. He made many of his closest friends over that period and through his work experience. Outside of work, Norm was just as determined and dedicated. He followed his passions with ferocity; as a runner, he went from 10K races to participating in Marathons around the country, and finally ultra-marathoning right into his 60’s. As a skier, he loved traveling with the Triple Cities Ski Club, as well as the special trips he took with his daughter Gina who shared that passion. And of course, his love of his Scottish heritage enticed him to learn the bagpipes, and after retiring from IBM he taught himself to read music and learn the bagpipes, ultimately playing with the Broome Co. Celtic Pipe and Drums for 33 years, meticulously handwriting many of the music sheets, and honoring many families with his music at weddings, funerals, fundraisers and assorted gatherings, if only for a pint of English Ale! Norm was also a woodcarver and whittler in his late years, and spent many hours enjoying running or hiking in the solace of the Glen with his brother and best friend Roy Bowell.
Above all, Norm was a devoted husband and father, and shared his heart and fun and guidance with so many other “adopted” kids who continue to look at him as a role model and parent figure. Norm is remembered for his joie de vivre, his love of life, his easy welcoming smile, his big open heart, his story-telling and sense of humor, and his quiet faithfulness and content.
Predeceased by his adoring daughter Lisa Mayers, his parents Rachael Gummoe Bowell, Edward Bowell), and brother Elwyn. Survived by the love of his life, wife Beatrice; beloved brothers Roy, Bear (Frances), Ed, and sister Dorothy Perhach; devoted daughter Gina Paradis; grand-daughter Emilee Mayers and Grandson Michael Paradis; his bodacious brood of nieces and nephews who he adored and their kids, and his many adopted kids, who will always remain in his heart and our family.
A special thanks to niece Nicole Perhach and the staff at Good Shepherd Endwell Skilled Nursing Unit who took especially good care of Norm in his final years.
