He joined the U.S. Army at age 17 and served for four years before returning to the Binghamton area. He worked as a plumber and welder on a variety of major construction jobs such as the Oakdale Mall in Johnson City, NY and the Nine Mile Point Nuclear Station in Oswego, NY. He also taught classes on welding, plumbing, heating, auto mechanics, small engine repair, and environmental conservation at Broome-Tioga BOCES in the early 1980s. His two main passions were cars and guns. He built and raced cars regionally, including at Five Mile Point Speedway in Kirkwood, NY, and enjoyed visiting hot rod and classic car shows. He was a certified hunter safety instructor, a lifetime member of the National Rifle Association, and an active member of the Broome County Sportsmen's Association. The family would like to thank the staff at UHS Wilson Medical Center for their compassionate care during his final days.
